Hello Friends,
If anyone out there still reads this blog, I wanted to let you know that we are home. We are back in Knoxville, back in our old home, and back at Cornerstone Church of Knoxville. I am working full time as a pastor on staff, and Jenny is working time and a half as a mom, caring for Ana and Elsie at home.

A final letter to our supporters is forthcoming, so thank you for your patience.

Christmas Break

Today is January 4th, 2010 and I am happy to report that we are refreshed and ready to begin a new semester of class at the Pastors College.
Highlights from Christmas 2009:

Snowstorm and getting stuck in Lexingtown, Virginia at the Howard Johnson's and we were very, very thankful to get a hotel room and manage to find food for 2 days.

Time with the Puncochar's and our 'faux' Christmas celebration the 23rd and 24th.
Time with the Yoders, their Christmas Eve dinner and the celebrated and highly anticipated annual 'mystery gift' tradition.
Celebrated Chrissie Puncochar's (Dave's mom) 60th Birthday on December 30th!
Spent New Years with Dave and Laura Mann and Dave and Krista Sagraves, and 7 kids under 4 years old, which was a great time of fun and fellowship.
Visited Cornerstone Church of Knoxville and got to see our church family whom we miss so much!
And made it back to Maryland without getting stuck in any snow!

We are so thankful to be here and anticipate great things in our lives this spring as the Lord has his way with us here at the Pastors College.

We turned the bathtub into a "fort bed" on our trip. Ana loved it, and Jenny and I loved not having to turn off all the lights during naptime!

I greatly respect this man.
I hope that I can be teaching and preaching the gospel at 80 years old like he is.
This week with him has been a wonderful week.
He has taught us about:
Grace.
Preaching the gospel to ourselves.
Suffering.
Trusting God.
Definitive Sanctification.
Progressive Sanctification.

And, he is an example of a man who has served God with his life, not out of an 'ought to', nor a 'have to', but a 'want to' because of God's love in Christ, in the Gospel.

Their goal is to babysit for us all year for different meetings, date nights, etc. They refuse to let us pay them for anything and have been such an amazing blessing to us. "Virtual" Attendence at CCK's family meeting

Last Friday night our church had it's quarterly family meeting. They invited us to join them on skype and it was such a blessing for Jenny and I. Elsie even made it in, though Ana was already in bed.

Jenny and I were reminded of God's goodness to us through our church. We were reminded of our dear friends in Knoxville. We were reminded of how much we miss home in Tennessee.

We were also humbled and encouraged by the congregation's obvious affection for us as a couple, by Mike's prayer, and by Bill's direct encouragement to us.

Cornerstone Church of Knoxville, we love you and thank God for you!

For Halloween, we had an Elvis, a "gypsy woman" and two little girls who dressed up as dogs...Ana said that she was "Gypsy," that is, our dog back in Tennessee. So....Elsie and Ana both ended up dressing up in honor of our dog Gypsy!

We said hello to some neighbors and then went to Covenant Life Church where they had a "Harvest Party" for all the kids. It was mass chaos...and a good time.

September is here. Labor Day weekend is upon us. I am thankful to have just finished my first essay exam on Systematic Theology I taught by Jeff Pursewell. My heart is affected and enlarged at the goodness of God to give us his scriptures. I am amazed at how many times Scripture attests to itself as to being God's word, his law.

I am also amazed by a Packer Quote: "God gave us his word to make friends with us." That is loosely quoted and could be a bit off...but it captures the gist of an amazing truth that I got to study this week.

We're making friends, slowly but surely, and we're learning to navigate our new waters together as a family.

Ana now has discovered hide and seek...thought mostly it is Daddy hide and ana shows me where she wants me to hide! Her joy is infectious! Like anybody else, it is not infectious nor present all the time, but it is a gift.

Elsie is beginning to smile at us...Ana keeps smothering her with love.

Jenny is making some good girlfriends here and is really doing an amazing job at all that she is doing for the family.

She wouldn't want me to write that either, b/c she is humble. But...since i do the blogging...I guess it'll stay!

Family Orientation Day at the Pastors College

Today we had family orientation day. We took the whole family and we were WARMLY welcomed into a new family for the next year.
I was overwhelmed by God's faithfulness in providing for my family in ways that I cannot. I am so aware of my inability to provide ALL of our needs and yet at the same time keenly aware of God's ability and desire to lavishly care for and keep my family in his arms.

I was overwhelmed today in many regards and I am stunned that I get to attend the PC, and I am blown away that my family gets to do this together.

Someone today commented on Jenny's humility in a woman's meeting...how she just opened her life up to the other women IMMEDIATELY! Betsy, this new friend of ours, said something to the effect that Jenny taught a 'clinic' in humility this week. Well said, Betsy. Jenny is humble, gracious, joyful and a gift to me and our kiddos!

Should we "Follow our hearts?"

Follow your heart! It is something said at almost every graduation ceremony and many life decisions receive this kind of advice.

This morning in our Bible reading, Jenny and I came across this verse which makes me think that "follow your heart" could in fact be very unwise, if not dangerous.

Numbers 15:37-40 ESV
The LORD said to Moses, "Speak to the people of Israel, and tell them to make tassels on the corners of their garments throughout their generations, and to put a cord of blue on the tassel of each corner. And it shall be a tassel for you to look at and remember all the commandments of the LORD, to do them, not to follow after your own heart and your own eyes, which you are inclined to whore after. So you shall remember and do all my commandments, and be holy to your God. I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt to be your God: I am the LORD your God."

It also reminds me of Jeremiah 17:9 "The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?"

So...let's be wary of "following our hearts" and let us try, fight, wrestle with Scripture, seek counsel that we may "Follow the LORD."

Below you will find my support letter that Jenny and I are sending out to raise money to go to Pastor's College and ultimately, hopefully, to plant a church. Some say that church planting is the new mission work, so it is with great fear of the Lord and joy that we send this out to see who God is moving upon to join us in what God is doing.

Greetings! I hope that this letter finds you doing well and enjoying the spring!
I am writing to update you on my ministry activities here in Knoxville and to ask your help in a future endeavor.
As you may recall, in the spring of 2008 I left sales at the invitation of my pastors at Cornerstone Church of Knoxville (CCK) to work at our church as a “Pastoral Intern.” It was a paid position designed for men like me who have considered a calling to full time ministry, but are seeking clarity. This internship that was offered to me was a one year commitment. Mostly I just learned to serve by watering trees, caring for the building, and essentially serving the pastors where they needed most help. I had the opportunity to teach and have had two chances to preach to small groups.
As the year has gone on, the guys have brought plenty of observations of my character: encouraging evidences of God’s grace as well as areas in which I need to grow in grace. The pastors have been kind enough to say hard things to me regarding sin they have seen such as pride, arrogance, and anger just to name a few. The Bible says in Proverbs, “Faithful are the wounds of a friend.” Well, these guys have been good friends and actually due to their loving rebukes I have been able to see my sin for what it is and repent to God and have received a ton of fresh forgiveness! I thank God for my pastors who have served me this year so well.
As they’ve watched my life, my marriage and my relationship with Jesus, the pastoral team has recommended that I apply to attend the Sovereign Grace Ministries Pastors College (PC) for the next year. This would provide me with a challenging theological training coupled with more pastoral care like I described above. The pastors have discerned that God might be calling me to be a church planter, so I am applying to the Pastors College with this end in mind. Most likely, if God confirms this calling, I will return to Cornerstone after the year at the PC and do a “Church Planting Internship” at CCK. After that year of internship, I hope by God’s grace to plant a church in our region. The city has not been determined, but it likely would be somewhere in Tennessee.

Sovereign Grace estimates that it usually costs anywhere from $40,000 to $50,000 for a year up at the PC for a family of 4. Tuition, Books, and the cost of living in the Washington, D.C. area all contribute to this daunting number.
Obviously I do not have this kind of money nor resources, so I am in need of your help. I hope to raise $20,000 this summer in large one time gifts so that I can pay for the tuition, books and get settled. The rest I hope will come in monthly pledges, as friends and family support as they are able.
Would you please prayerfully and carefully consider supporting us in this huge endeavor? Thank you very much.
